Flirtini Recipe

I first made a Flirtini after a Sex and the City rewatch left me craving one. It’s one of my favorite episodes and the scene with the rooftop party always leaves me craving it. “Vodka, pineapple, and champagne” in the same sentence, it’s a fun combination indeed. Whether you can find pineapple vodka or not, I’d still choose vanilla. It brings a warm, sweet note that plays beautifully off the pineapple, and that’s the way I still make it years later.

What I Love About My Flirtini

  • This cocktail carries all the flirty, celebratory energy that made it a Sex and the City favorite, and it’s become my go-to whenever I want to turn an ordinary night into something worth toasting.
  • Three ingredients and five minutes get me a round without missing the party.
  • The pineapple and vanilla vodka combination tastes rich and tropical without feeling too sweet.
  • It looks gorgeous in a martini glass with the cherry sitting at the bottom, so it photographs as well as it drinks.
  • I can batch the vodka and pineapple juice ahead of time and just add champagne right before serving.

Key Ingredient Notes

  • Champagne – I reach for a brut champagne here since it’s the driest style and keeps the drink from turning overly sweet on top of the pineapple juice. Prosecco works too and brings its own fruity, floral edge if that’s what you have on hand.
  • Pineapple Juice – Use 100% pineapple juice, not a pineapple cocktail mix. Straight juice gives you a clean, true pineapple flavor instead of something artificially sweet.
  • Vanilla Vodka – True pineapple vodka is hard to find at most liquor stores, so vanilla vodka is my go-to swap. It adds a warm sweetness that pairs naturally with the pineapple.
  • Maraschino Cherries – One cherry sinks to the bottom of the glass for a pop of color and a sweet last bite once your drink is gone.

How to Make a Flirtini

  1. Chill your martini glass in the freezer for a few minutes before you start. A cold glass keeps the cocktail colder for longer once it’s poured.
  2. Add the vanilla vodka and pineapple juice to a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake until the outside of the shaker feels frosty, about 10-15 seconds.
  3. Strain the mixture into your chilled glass.
  4. Pour the champagne in slowly, right down the side of the glass. Pouring slowly keeps the bubbles from foaming over the top.
  5. Drop in a maraschino cherry and serve right away while the champagne is still fizzy.

Flirtini Recipe FAQs

What is a Flirtini?

A Flirtini is a bubbly cocktail made with vodka, pineapple juice, and champagne. It became famous after showing up on Sex and the City, during a rooftop party.

Can I use Prosecco instead of Champagne?

Yes. Prosecco is usually a bit sweeter than brut champagne and brings its own fruity, floral notes, so it still works well against the pineapple and vodka. If you wish, you can use unflavored vodka.

What’s the best vodka for a Flirtini?

Vanilla vodka is my favorite here since pineapple vodka is tough to find. If you do come across a bottle of pineapple vodka, feel free to swap it in. Or, you can use unflavored classic vodka.

Can I make a Flirtini ahead of time for a party?

Yes. Shake the vodka and pineapple juice together and keep it chilled in the fridge or a pitcher over ice. Add the champagne right before serving so it stays bubbly.

What glass should I use to serve a Flirtini?

A classic martini glass is traditional and lets the drink’s color shine, but a champagne coupe or flute works just as well if that’s what you have.

I own a bunch of martini glasses but I cannot recall the last time I actually made a martini. I’ve made all kinds of other mixed drinks though. Maybe it’s time to brush the dust off the martini glasses for this one.
