Why Is Homemade Hummus So Special

Hummus is a classic Middle Eastern dip made from chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, garlic, and olive oil. It’s known for its smooth, creamy texture and rich, nutty flavor. Traditionally served as part of a mezze platter, hummus has become a staple snack and appetizer all over the world.

  • While it’s convenient to grab a tub from the store, homemade hummus is a completely different experience.
  • The flavor is fresher, the texture is creamier, and you can adjust everything exactly to your taste. Once you try making it yourself, it’s hard to go back.
  • This recipe is my go-to because it’s simple, reliable, and always delivers the creamiest hummus with a perfect balance of nutty tahini, bright lemon juice, and just the right touch of garlic.
  • There are plenty of fun variations to try, like roasted red pepper hummus, but this classic version is the one I keep coming back to.

Ingredients You’ll Need

The ingredients for hummus are placed on a wooden cutting board.

This is a no-frills recipe that only uses the essential ingredients for classic, easy, and delicious homemade hummus.

  • Chickpeas – Just one can of chickpeas is all you need for this simple recipe. No matter which brand of chickpeas you buy, be sure to strain them before using but save some of the liquid.
  • Chickpea Juices – When straining the chickpeas, reserve approximately 1/2 cup of the liquid. It’s much better to use it than adding water..
  • Lemon Juice – This recipe calls for 3 tablespoons of fresh lemon juice, so you’ll need at least 2 lemons to squeeze. Avoid using the store-bough lemon juices, as they typically have a noticeably artificial taste.
  • Tahini – This classic Middle Eastern sesame paste provides a deep earthy flavor to the recipe that really helps to elevate and enhance the natural, authentic flavors of the hummus.
  • Garlic Cloves – In this hummus recipe, the garlic should just be a light hint that compliments the other flavors. Avoid adding too much fresh garlic and if you like more garlic flavor, add some roasted garlic instead.
  • Olive Oil – Use good quality olive oil but taste it first to make sure it’s not too bitter.
  • Ground Cumin – This is yet another earthy ingredient that adds to the overall warmness of the hummus that we’re aiming for.
  • Salt – Just a little of salt is needed to help enhance the other ingredients in this hummus and make it truly mouthwatering. However, if you want to keep this hummus low-sodium, omit the salt entirely.
  • Paprika – No classic hummus would ever be complete without a dash of vibrant red paprika across the top! Paprika provides a delicately sweet flavor that balances well with the warmer, earthier ingredients.

What is tahini and how to use it?

Tahini is a paste made out of roasted sesame seeds. It taste quite mind but you definitely will taste its presence. It’s a Middle Eastern ingredient that’s used in many popular dishes!

If you have tahini left over, put it to good use. You can use tahini on top of many Middle Eastern recipes like gyros, falafel, eggplant baba Ganoush. You can also mix it into sesame salad dressing and so many different sauces. If you haven’t tried chocolate brownies with tahini swirled into the top, you’re definitely missing out!

How to Make Hummus

The ingredients for hummus are unblended in a food processor.
  1. Start by straining the liquid from the can of chickpeas, and remember to reserve 1/2 of the liquid.
  2. Toss all of the ingredients for hummus, except for the paprika, into a food processor or blender.
Hummus has been thoroughly blended.
  1. Blend the ingredient until you have a completely smooth finished product. You do not want ANY lumps in the hummus!
  2. Once thoroughly blended, transfer the homemade hummus into your favorite serving bowl. Top it off with a drizzle of olive oil, paprika, and even some fresh herbs. Enjoy!

Tips for the Creamiest Hummus

If you’ve ever had hummus that’s too thick or grainy, these tips will make all the difference:

Peel the chickpeas (optional but helpful): Removing the skins creates an ultra-smooth texture. The easiest method is to rinse the chickpeas and gently rub them between your hands in a bowl of water, allowing the skins to float to the top for removal.
Blend longer than you think: Give it time to get silky while blending. You can stop and check from time to time.
Add liquid gradually: Use reserved canned chickpea liquid, cold water, or a touch extra lemon juice to adjust consistency.
Use good tahini: It makes a big difference in flavor and texture.
Taste and adjust: Balance the lemon, salt, and garlic to your liking.

How to Serve Hummus

Hummus is incredibly versatile and works with so many things:

• With pita bread or pita chips.
• Fresh veggies like carrots, cucumbers, and bell peppers.
• As a spread on sandwiches and wraps.
• On a mezze platter with olives, cheeses, some homemade baba Ganoush, grape leaves, roasted bell peppers, and other appetizers.
• Drizzled with olive oil and sprinkled with paprika or herbs.

Classic Hummus FAQs

Where did hummus originate?

Hummus is a traditional Middle Eastern spread/dip with a long history. However, interestingly enough, the first origins of hummus can be traced all the way back to 13th century Egypt. That’s why hummus will never just be a fad – it’s lasted centuries in countries all over the world!

Can I use dried chickpeas?

Yes! You do have to properly soak and cook them until very tender before using. Using dried chickpeas significantly alters the texture of hummus, resulting in a more creamier, smoother, and lighter results. It just takes much longer.

Can I freeze hummus?

You can, but the texture may change. Some people notice and care more for the difference than others. Stir well after thawing.

How do I make it thinner?

Add a little more chickpea liquid, cold water, or lemon juice a little at a time until you reach your desired consistency.

  1. Miss pity pay says:

    How long can it keep

    1. Hummus generally lasts for about a week in the refrigerator.

  2. 5 stars
This is by far the best hummus recipe. I’ve tried others and this is better than store bought. Just want to note that the ingredients say 1/2 cup of liquid and the instructions say 1/4 cup. I’ve tried both and the 1/4 cup is the way to go….much creamier!

  3. I have made this Hummus Recipe so many times and we alway enjoy it with pita bread, roll-ups, with vegetables and tonight I will add it to our burritos. It is the best. Thanks
