Homemade Buttermilk Waffles make every morning so much better. These waffles are soft and fluffy on the inside and crunchy on the outside. A perfect way to start the day. Try adding berries, cinnamon, or chocolate chips to this waffle recipe to get a different flavor every time. Waffles are not just for breakfast thought, it’s great with chicken or to be substituted as sandwich bread. Waffles are also easily frozen, so don’t be afraid to make a big batch.

Check out some savory variations of waffles like my Bacon Waffles and Cheese and Green Onion Waffles. These waffles are perfect for making a sandwich. Try topping your waffles with some easy Strawberry Sauce.

WAFFLE RECIPE

My house is greatly divided in the debate over waffles vs. pancakes. Half side with waffles and the other half sides with pancakes. Personally, I am on the waffles side.

Growing up, waffles were a special weekend breakfast that my mom made once in a while. I still remember waking up to the sweet aroma of waffles. Well, not so much waking up to it as dragging my mom out of bed, begging her to make waffles while she was begging to let her sleep in on a weekend.

The irony is that my son does the same thing now. Starting first thing in the morning, a little man runs into my bedroom every 10 minutes begging for “mommy’s waffles.”

The best thing about homemade waffles is that they can easily be frozen. I can grab one out of the freezer and pop it in the toaster while I’m still waking up. By the time coffee is ready, so as breakfast.

Homemade waffles are just 30 minutes away fresh from the waffle maker or 5 minutes away if you freeze the fresh batch.

TIPS FOR MAKING THE BEST WAFFLES

It’s best to let your cold ingredients like eggs and buttermilk get to room temperature. Take out the eggs and measure out the buttermilk. Let it sit on the counter for about 30 minutes.

Let the waffle batter sit for about 15 minutes, while the waffle maker is preheating. This will give all ingredients a chance to activate and will result is softer, fluffier waffles.

Make sure to read the instructions for your waffle maker for the amount of batter to pour at a time and how long to cook the waffles.

To keep cooked waffles warm while making the rest, pre-heated the oven to 200° and keep waffles in the oven, on a baking sheet.

To cool waffles faster in order to freeze them, place them on a wire rack. This will cool the waffles evenly and keep the bottom of the waffles from accumulating moisture.

WHAT FLAVORS TO ADD

This buttermilk waffle recipe is very easy to variate in flavor. You can add fruit, chocolate chips, cinnamon, vanilla beans, or finely chopped nuts.

If adding cut fruit, toss them with a little bit of flour before folding them into the batter. This will prevent cut fruit from adding extra moisture to the waffles.

HOW TO FREEZE THEM

Freezing waffles could not be any easier.

After the waffles are cooked, make sure to cool them completely. Cool waffles on a wire rack so they cool faster and evenly without accumulating moisture on the bottom.

Place waffles all waffles into a large zip-lock freezer bag or places each waffle into a smaller individual freezer bag. Get as much air out as you can and close the bag tight. Label and date the bags.

Freeze waffles for up to 3 months.

Frozen waffles can easily be reheated and toasted in a toaster.

This recipe was very tasty. The waffles came out crisp and brown on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. I could taste the tanginess of the buttermilk which added to the flavor. This goes very well with Mimosa….just sayin
