Ingredients You’ll Need Tips and Substitutions

There are just a few simple ingredients and most are commonly found in stores:

  • Pomegranate juice – you can easily get pomegranate juice from the store, like POM.
  • Gin – choose your favorite gin since every gin has a slightly different flavor. Substitute: you can easily substitute vodka or light rum if you don’t like gin.
  • St-Germain – this is an elderflower liqueur and it adds soft floral sweetness.
  • Pomegranate liqueur – this is a great liqueur to add more pomegranate flavor. I sometimes use it in my pomegranate martini and pomegranate champagne punch to help increase pomegranate flavor.
  • Lemon juice – fresh lemon juice is the best option but you can use bottled if it’s the only option.
  • Prosecco – adds sparkle, a touch of sweetness, and refreshing fizz. Substitute: use champagne as another option or to lessen the amount of alcohol, use club soda.

How To Make Pomegranate Gin Cocktail

This cocktail comes together in just a couple of minutes, and the process is as simple as it is fun.

Start by filling your cocktail shaker with some ice a well-chilled base is what makes this drink so refreshing.

Pour in the pomegranate juice, gin, St-Germain, pomegranate liqueur, and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. Give everything a vigorous shake until the outside of the shaker feels frosty and your ingredients are nicely blended.

Once it’s chilled, strain the mixture into a glass filled with fresh ice. The final touch is a splash of prosecco. Add it slowly and give the drink just a gentle swirl to preserve as many of those bubbles as possible. Within minutes, you’ll have a beautifully balanced, ruby-red cocktail that looks stunning and tastes even better.

Expert Tips for the Best Pomegranate Gin Cocktail

Chill everything first. Cold juice, cold gin, and cold prosecco make a big difference. Starting with chilled ingredients helps prevent watering it down with ice. Warmer ingredients melt ice!

Use fresh lemon juice. Bottled lemon juice is not as fresh and aromatic as fresh one so it does make the cocktails taste better. You can always save the rest in the refrigerator, wrapped air-tight, for a few days. (Or make a lemon drop martini!)

Pick a gin you enjoy. Floral gins or citrus-forward gins can bring out different layers in the cocktail. Choose something that matches the vibe you want.

Taste before pouring into the glass and adjust. If you prefer sweeter drinks, add a splash of simple syrup (or cinnamon syrup). If you like them more tart, add an extra squeeze of lemon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this into a pitcher?

Absolutely! Multiply all ingredients by however many servings you want (remember not to add prosecco until the rest is finished and ready to serve). Mix the base in a pitcher and refrigerate. Don’t add ice until ready to serve. Pour into glasses over ice and top each serving with prosecco just before serving.

Can I make it ahead?

You can mix everything except the prosecco and ice up to 1-2 days in advance. Keep refrigerated and covered air-tight. Shake before serving and top off with prosecco.

What glass should I use?

You need an glass that is no smaller than 8 oz, 10 oz preferably to account for ice.

Why use fresh ice when serving the cocktail?

That is actually a personal preference! In my years of bartending, I learned that there are die-hard believers for both sides, those that always want fresh ice and those who firmly prefer “dirty ice.” Dirty ice is the term for ice that was shaken with the cocktail. So make your own choice!
