What Makes My Bahama Mama SO Good
This is my go-to cocktail that I make for summer parties. I actually get to make it much more often because I live in the tropics, so I can make it almost all year long. Bahama Mama is our favorite because:
- Two rums, one cocktail: Coconut rum (or silver rum) and dark rum work together to balance the tropical fruitiness with depth and warmth, neither one overwhelms the other.
- That sunset layer: Grenadine naturally sinks while dark rum floats, giving you those beautiful layers before you stir. If you love a showstopper rum cocktail like this one, also try a rum punch or a rum runner.
- Five ingredients: That’s it. No specialty syrups, no obscure liqueurs. Just rum, juice, and a touch of grenadine.
- Kid-friendly version built in: Skip the liquor, add a little more juice, and you have a “Bahama Baby” that little ones will love just as much.

Important Ingredients In A Bahama Mama

While there is a little room to play around, the bases of any Bahama Mama recipe include:
- Rum – coconut rum is the most traditional (and tastiest) rum to use in combination of dark rum.
- Orange Juice – my biggest advice here is to use no-pulp or pulp-free juice. Even if you like pulp in your morning oj, don’t use it in cocktails.
- Pineapple Juice – use pineapple juice and not one mixed with other fruit flavors or it will skew the flavor of your cocktail.
- Grenadine – be careful with this ingredient, it’s very sweet! If you don’t trust your hand-pour, pour some into a teaspoon first.
- Garnish – as a garnish, you can use a pineapple wedge, orange slice, maraschino cherries, dirty cherries, lemon slice or lime slice.
Tips To Make a Bahama Mama Cocktail

- Coconut rum: choose your favorite! Not all coconut rums are created equal, so make sure to use your favorite! They can be sweeter, stronger, or have more coconut flavor. RumHaven brand, for example, is sweet but not strong. It tastes more like coconut liqueur, mild and very sweet. Parrot Bay 90 proof rum has a very strong coconut taste but it is quite strong. So make rum selection according to your personal preference.
- Pour in grenadine: carefully and slowly pour in grenadine juice next to the inside rim of the glass, it can be touching the inside wall of the glass. Grenadine is very dense and heavy so it will naturally sink to the bottom of the glass.
- Serve it layered: You can serve a Bahama mama layered because it looks beautiful, but it will need to be stirred before drinking. So use a straw or a long spoon to stir the cocktail for a few seconds to mix all ingredients.

Make It by the Pitcher or Make Ahead
For a pitcher: This recipe makes one serving, but it scales up easily. For a 60 oz pitcher (10 to 12 servings), use 18 oz coconut rum, 18 oz orange juice, 18 oz pineapple juice, 2 oz grenadine, and 4 oz dark rum. Mix everything except the grenadine and dark rum together, then pour those in last for the best layered effect. (Stir before serving.)
Make ahead: Mix the rum, juices, and grenadine together in a sealed jar or pitcher and refrigerate for up to 24 hours. Leave out the ice until just before serving. You won’t get the sunset layers when you make it in advance, but it’s a great time-saving option for a party.

Variations to Try
- Virgin (Bahama Baby): Skip both rums and combine orange juice, pineapple juice, and a touch of grenadine. My kids request it all summer long.
- Frozen Bahama mama: Add all ingredients to a blender with 1 cup of crushed ice and blend until smooth. It becomes a slushy tropical treat that’s perfect for a hot day. (Or pour it into your slushie machine)
- Less sweet: Coconut rum adds a good amount of sweetness on its own. To dial it back, swap coconut rum for white rum and add a small squeeze of fresh lime juice to keep the brightness without the sugar load.
- Spiced: Replace the dark rum with a good spiced rum for a warmer, more aromatic version.

Bahama Mama Recipe FAQs
Like many other classic and Caribbean cocktails, the origins are unknows and disputed. It is believed that this cocktail was inspired by the Nassau native calypso singer Dorothy “Dottie” Lee Anderson, also knows as “Bahama Mama.” She was a popular performer in the 1950s in the hottest Miami nightclubs. “Bahama Mama” was also a very popular song in the early 1900s. Or it could have been names after the island itself, since it was a popular rum smuggling port back it the day.
It’s sweet and fruity, with the tropical brightness of pineapple and orange at the front, a warm rum backbone, and a slight richness from the grenadine. The coconut rum adds a mellow, slightly sweet coconut note without being overpowering.
A hurricane glass is traditional and perfect for showing off the layers. A tall collins glass works just as well.

- Pina Colada – the frozen, creamy cousin of the Bahama mama. Coconut, pineapple, and rum blended smooth with a dark rum float on top.
- Coconut Mojito – fresh mint, lime, coconut rum, and coconut syrup make this the most refreshing warm-weather cocktail. Bold coconut flavor without being heavy.
- Strawberry Daiquiri – bright, fresh, and frozen. One of the easiest rum cocktails to make and always a crowd-pleaser.

Notes
- Coconut rum: choose your favorite! Not all coconut rums are created equal, so make sure to use your favorite! They can be sweeter, stronger, or have more coconut flavor. - To Make A Pitcher: this Bahama mama recipe is for one but you can very easily make it a pitcher (especially since I did the calculation for you). An average pitcher is 60 oz, which is 10-12 servings. So to make a 60 oz pitcher you will need: 18 oz of coconut rum, 18 oz orange juice, 18 oz pineapple juice, 2 oz grenadine, and 4 oz dark rum.
- Make Ahead: you can definitely make several of these cocktails ahead of time. Simply mix the rum and juices in the glass jar but do not add ice. Cover it tight and store in the refrigerator. Make it ahead of time will not give you the sunset layered looks but it’s easy way to prepare for a party.
